School House Rock

This is Peter's first day of school, and he already has a girlfriend, Cassia. (How is it that my child, who cares about having alone-time with legos and not much else, already has a friend while I'm over here lonely as hell?) Only problem, she's American. I went to pick him up and heard a chorus of "bye Peter!" At first, I thought maybe the Austrian children had just taken to saying the word bye (so much shorter than auf wiedersehen), but turns out the school is teaming with American kids. So much for deutsch-only. At least the teachers insist on German. When Peter asked his teacher a question in English, Cassia whispered into his ear: "We think she knows English, but she'll only answer you if you speak to her in German."

The school is a huge improvement from the dungeon we started out in yesterday. It's in a nicely lit old building, one block away from a sprawling park that's so typical in Vienna. It's about half the size of Prospect Park and has everything a
kid could wish for.
